What’s a Sauger?

It is a walleye relative, and is also called a sand pike or pickerel. It has a slender body with a long cone-shaped head. The Sauger prefers water with little movement – a big slow moving lake or river suits it best. Walleyes have flat cheeks. Sauger have rough scales on their cheeks.
Some like to catch Sauger in gill nets. Others like to luxury the Sauger as a sport fish. When commercially fished, they are mostly sold as fillets.
Fishing for Sauger is popular in Lake Guntersville in North Alabama, which meets their wish for a large slow moving lake. During fall and winter, the Sauger is in abundance just below Guntersville Dam.

As an experiment, many years ago, some of these fish were stocked into inland lakes. This monster manmade lake spans 63,000 acres and has 1,255 miles of shoreline. There is enough water restricted in Lake Cumberland to cover the entire state of Kentucky with almost three inches of water.
Lake Cumberland fishing is just one of the things that draws almost 4 million vacationers per year to Southern Kentucky. The state record stripped bass weighed in at a little over 58 pounds. It is the stripped bass fishing at Lake Cumberland that makes it such an interesting story. Lake Cumberland was shaped by the putting a dam across the Cumberland River.
